Master Dunphy has trained in martial arts for over 30 years and continues to
study under the guidance of Grandmaster Huang Chien. Grandmaster Huang Chien Liang is the only full 64th
heir to the Tien Shan Pai system and was accepted as the Supreme Grandmaster's top disciple in July of 1981.
Master Dunphy won the 1981 National Championship in kung fu forms and weapons and also the 1981 Grand
Championship in kung fu forms and weapons. In the Republic of China (Taiwan), in 1986, he won the World
Championship in Kuoshu Lei Tai full contact fighting (a style of fighting where you are allowed to kick,
punch, knee strike, elbow strike, grapple, and throw your opponent down to the floor or off a raised
platform. It was at this prestigous tournament that Master Dunphy became famous for being
the only American fighter to win the first place gold medal and earn the name of "Iron Fist" for
his consistent early first round Knockouts.
A Fifth Degree (Master Level) Black Sash in Tien Shan
Pai and a USCKF Certified Sixth Degree Black Sash, Master Dunphy is currently the highest ranked
master in the Tien Shan Pai system of Chinese Martial Arts under Grandmaster Huang. Master Dunphy
is known for his ability to train his students in all aspects of practical and effective self defense
skills as well as how to be successfull in life and how to excel in tournament competitions, if a
student has that as a goal. Master Dunphy has produced world class champions in kuoshu full
contact fighting, light contact sparring, forms, weapons, tai chi forms and push hands (tai
chi adhering hands and unbalancing the opponent sparring).
He also has trained students to
high levels in other internal styles of Hsing-I, Pa Kua, Chi-Kung, Nei-Kung and different types
of standing and sitting meditations. He has helped mold and guide a large number of his younger students
to graduate high school and college with high honors and reach success later on in their lives. At the
2004 USCKF International Kuoshu Tournament, three of his students were awarded competitor of the year
awards.
Master Dunphy has successfully gone through the traditional old style rigorous kung fu training
which included seven days a week of extensive kung fu training for ten years. He is also an accomplished
internal arts master of Yang and Chen styles of Tai Chi, Hsing-I, Pa-Kua, Chi-Kung, Nei-Kung as well as
the Taoist and Tibetan Buddhist meditations of energetics and wisdom as well as the accompanying
philosophies that are essential to mastering the internal health and strength development process, using
mental exercises that aid one in producing both vitality for a long and healthy life and positive spirit
for a tranquil and joyful demeanor. By virtue of studying internal martial arts for more than 26 years
under the direct guidance of Grandmaster Huang, he is able to pass on the traditional physical, mental
and spiritual trainings of Chinese martial Arts in a format to westerners that is easy for them to grasp
and understand with out losing the essense of Tien Shan Pai.
Master Dunphy has been featured on national
television, has performed and demonstrated in front of large audiences around the world and has been on
television and in newspaper articles internationally as well as the U.S. He has written articles and
collaborated on training videos of different aspects of Martial Arts. He has been selected as one of the
top 100 most influential martial artists of this century by Inside Kung Fu magazine. He has been actively
involved in the United States Chinese Kuoshu Federation (USCKF) International Tournament, one of the top
martial art tournaments in the world.
He is a world renowned certified judge A level (highest), in forms
weapons and fighting as well as having served as chief judge and tournament director of the USCKF
Internationals. He is a current high ranking official of the USCKF and a board member of the World Kuoshu
Federation (TWKF). He has been inducted into several martial art halls of fame, was awarded the martial
art pinnacle statue and had his name and picture enshrined onto the wall of the USCKF Hall Of Fame
building in San Francisco.
